Springfield, Missouri- Robert D. Strang, MD, a physician of Springfield Neurological and Spine Institute, LLC, has received certification from the American Board of Neurological Surgery (ABNS). The broad aim of the American Board of Neurological Surgery is to “encourage the study, improve the practice, elevate the standards, and advance the science of neurological surgery and thereby to serve the cause of public health” 1. Recognizing the need for detailed training and special qualifications for the practice of neurosurgery, the ABNS was formed in 1940 and today continues to serve as the certification board for neurosurgeons. To be eligible for certification, a physician must graduate from a medical school acceptable to the board, perform a 12 month neurosurgery internship, and complete 60 months of neurosurgery residency. After training, a neurosurgeon will take a written examination. Upon completion of the written exam, a case log of 100 patients must be presented to the Board for review. The final step in certification is an oral exam, which lasts three hours, and covers the diagnosis, management, and outcomes of surgical and medical diseases of the nervous system. Dr. Strang is a 1994 graduate of the University of Kansas medical school, where he also completed his residency in 2000. Dr. Strang went on to complete a one-year fellowship in Skull Base surgery at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock in 2001, and is the only fellowship-trained skull base neurosurgeon in private practice in Missouri. Springfield Neurological Institute, LLC is an independent practice serving CoxHealth Hospital. Other members include Drs. Thomas B. Briggs, H. Mark Crabtree, Wade M. Ceola, Edwin J. Cunningham, John F. Ferguson, Ted A. Lennard, J. Charles Mace, Salim Rahman, Jeffrey A. Woodward, and Michael J. Workman. Springfield Neurological and Spine Institute offers the only board-certified neurosurgeons available in Springfield, MO. 1. Primary Certification Process. (n.d.).
