Springfield, MO- Springfield Neurological and Spine Institute, LLC (SNSI) is proud to host the second annual Ozarks Neurosurgery Educational (ONE) Course which takes place August 20th-24th in the Hilton Convention Center at the Branson Landing. The clinic is intended to provide a focused educational experience designed to guide senior level neurosurgery residents and fellows. The course will bring together faculty from private practice and academic centers under one venue, which includes neurosurgeons from Springfield Neurological and Spine Institute. This year’s agenda includes: Managing Complex Cranial Pathology, Managing Spinal Pathology and Managing to Choose the Correct Practice.

One of the highlights in this year’s ONE clinic is featured speaker, Professor Dr. M. Gazi Yasargil. Dr. Yasargil will lecture during the Thursday Cranial morning session on Sylvian Fissure Gliomas. He is a world-renowned medical scientist and neurosurgeon whose specialties include surgery for epilepsy, brain tumors, arterial venous malformations, microsurgery, cavernomas, and aneurysms. Dr. Yasargil is also the pioneer of instrumentation used in neurological practices including: Yasargil aneurysm clips, self-retaining brain retractor, mobile micro mirrors, microneurosurgical instruments, operating microscope, chair hydraulic and arm rest hydraulic. Dr. Yasargil is the recipient of numerous awards including: Pioneer Microsurgeon Award of the International Microsurgical Society, Medical Award of the Republic of Turkey, Gold Medal of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies, Distinguished Faculty Scholar, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, Honored as “Neurosurgeon of the Century” by the Brazilian Neurosurgical Society (1998), and Honored as “Man of the Century 1950-2000” by the journal, Neurosurgery at the Congress of Neurological Surgeons Annual Meeting (1999) just to name a few. The efforts of Dr. Yasargil in the development of specific operations and instruments have had a great impact in the way neurosurgery is taught and performed today.

The keynote speaker on Friday, for managing complex spinal pathology, is Dr. Neil Wright, Assistant Professor at Washington University School of Medicine, Department of Neurological Surgery and Orthopedics. Dr. Wright specializes in spinal degenerative disease, minimally invasive surgery, neurological and spine surgery. He received the prestigious Mayfield Award, for the best research in spinal disorders by a neurosurgery resident. The American Association of Neurological Surgeons gives this award to one neurosurgery resident from the United States or Canada on an annual basis. In 2004, Dr. Wright also developed a new, safer technique for performing surgery on the top of the neck, which is rapidly being adopted by other neurosurgeons across the country.

The 2008 ONE clinic also uniquely features a hands-on cadaver lab intended to teach the latest techniques in cranial and spinal surgery. There are five different cadaver stations made possible by generous sponsorships from our corporate sponsors, which include Stryker, Medtronic Spine and Biologics, Trans1, Abbott Spine, and Globus Medical.

The ONE Clinic provides and exciting opportunity for senior level neurosurgery residents, neurosurgery fellows, and practicing neurosurgeons to engage in this educational endeavor while receiving valuable insight into both surgical technique as well as practice management topics.
