August is Neurosurgery Awareness Month!

What is Neurosurgery?

The history of neurosurgery dates back hundreds of years. While the procedures and technologies have advanced greatly since the early years of neurosurgical intervention, the focus of achieving the best possible outcomes and improving quality of life remains steadfast.

Neurosurgery, as defined by the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, is the medical specialty concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of disorders that affect the spinal column, spinal cord, brain, nervous system and peripheral nerves. A neurosurgeon undergoes lengthy and rigorous training. By the time most neurosurgeons complete their training, they have completed a total of 15 years (or more) of education beyond high school. Some neurosurgeons pursue even further education in the form of fellowships to specialize in a given sub-specialty.

Neurosurgery is much more than complex brain and spine surgery. Neurosurgeons diagnosis your condition and work with you to develop a progressive treatment plan. Often, treatment consists of non-surgical or conservative measures.

Here are a few of the many conditions which neurosurgeons treat:

  • Spinal disc herniation
  • Spinal Stenosis (abnormal narrowing)
  • Spinal fractures
  • Hydrocephalus
  • Carpel Tunnel Syndrome
  • Ulnar Neuropathy
  • Aneurysms of the brain and spinal cord
  • Head trauma: brain hemorrhages, skull fractures, etc.
  • Tumors of the brain and spinal cord

Other symptoms for seeing a neurosurgeon may include atypical headaches or facial pain, weakness, dizziness/balance issues, unusual pain or numbness. If you feel you need to see a neurosurgeon, talk with your doctor about your symptoms.

During Neurosurgery Awareness Month, Springfield Neurological and Spine Institute celebrates nearly two decades of neurosurgical care to our community. We are proud of our team and accomplishments. In February, 2001, Dr. Mark Crabtree and Dr. John Ferguson fulfilled a vision of unifying neurosurgery in Springfield, MO by forming Springfield Neurological and Spine Institute (SNSI). Prior to the establishment of SNSI, two neurosurgery practices and at least three independent neurosurgeons had served the community. By combining their independent practices, both Drs. Crabtree and Ferguson felt the community’s neurosurgical needs would be better served.

Bringing together the experience, expertise, and training of both independent groups allowed SNSI to recruit fellowship trained neurosurgeons , further positioning themselves as the area’s leading provider in neurosurgical care. To provide the most comprehensive care available, SNSI offers physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians, an interventional neuroradiologist, and fellowship trained neurosurgeons in skull-base, endovascular, complex spine, and oncology neurosurgery.

To improve the service provided to the patients of SNSI, a state of the art diagnostic imaging center was opened in May 2003. SNI Imaging, now JNC Imaging, provides MRI, CT, Fluoroscopy procedures, and standard X-ray procedures.

In November 2003, SNSI began a primary hospital affiliation with CoxHealth. As a member of CoxHealth neuro services, SNSI works closely with many referring physicians, provides trauma services, and performs surgeries at CoxHealth.

In July 2015, SNSI and CoxHealth integrated in neuroscience care. The Jared Neuroscience Center combines neurology, neurosurgery, neuropsychology, and physiatry – plus specialty clinics for diseases such as Parkinson’s and ALS – together in a facility that is uniquely designed for collaborative care.
