Basivertebral Nerve Ablation: A Breakthrough Treatment for Chronic Low Back Pain

Chronic low back pain is a debilitating condition that affects millions of people worldwide, often leading to a decreased quality of life and limited mobility. While traditional treatments like physical therapy, medication, and injections can provide relief, they may not always address the root cause of the pain. One of the latest advancements in spine care is basivertebral nerve (BVN) ablation, a minimally invasive procedure that targets a specific source of vertebrogenic pain.

What is Basivertebral Nerve Ablation?

Basivertebral nerve ablation is a non-surgical treatment designed to relieve vertebrogenic pain—a type of chronic low back pain that originates from damaged vertebral endplates. The procedure involves using radiofrequency energy to ablate (disable) the basivertebral nerve, which is responsible for transmitting pain signals from the vertebrae to the brain. By disrupting these signals, patients can experience significant and long-lasting pain relief.

Who is a Candidate for BVN Ablation?

BVN ablation is typically recommended for patients who:
✅ Have experienced chronic low back pain for six months or longer
✅ Have not responded well to conservative treatments (e.g., medications, physical therapy, injections)
✅ Have MRI findings showing Modic changes (inflammatory changes in vertebral endplates)
✅ Do not have spinal instability, fractures, or other conditions requiring surgery

If you have been struggling with persistent low back pain that hasn’t improved with other treatments, a consultation can determine if you are a good candidate for a BVN ablation procedure.

The BVN Ablation Procedure: What to Expect

The procedure is performed in an outpatient setting and takes about 60–90 minutes. Here’s what happens:

  1. Preparation: The patient is placed under light sedation or local anesthesia for comfort.
  2. Guided Access: A small incision is made in the lower back, and a specialized needle is guided into the affected vertebra using fluoroscopic (X-ray) imaging.
  3. Radiofrequency Ablation: A small probe is inserted to deliver radiofrequency energy, ablating the basivertebral nerve and stopping pain signals.
  4. Recovery: The incision is closed, and patients are monitored briefly before going home the same day.

Recovery and Expected Results

One of the biggest advantages of BVN ablation is minimal downtime. Most patients can resume light activities within a few days and gradually return to normal activities over a few weeks. While some may experience immediate relief, the full benefits typically develop over 6–12 weeks as inflammation subsides.

Clinical studies have shown that BVN ablation provides long-term pain relief, with many patients experiencing sustained improvement for at least five years. Unlike temporary treatments such as steroid injections, this procedure targets the root cause of vertebrogenic pain for lasting relief.

Why Choose Basivertebral Nerve Ablation?

Minimally invasive – No major surgery or implants required
Long-lasting relief – Clinically proven to provide years of pain reduction
Quick recovery – Return to normal activities faster than with traditional surgery
Improves quality of life – Reduces reliance on medications and enhances mobility

If chronic low back pain has been limiting your life, BVN ablation could be the breakthrough treatment you’ve been looking for. Contact us today to see if this procedure is right for you!
